About Us

The Mosquito Research & Control Unit (MRCU) was established in 1965 when Marco Giglioli arrived from London with instructions ‘to establish a laboratory and conduct research with a view to advising the Cayman Government on suitable methods of control.

The Mosquito Research and Control Unit aims to help Cayman Islands residents by reducing mosquito nuisance and protecting against mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue which are common in the region.

To do this, we employ an Integrated Pest Management approach, using a range of physical, biological and chemical control techniques to minimize nuisance levels of mosquitoes and prevent disease transmission.

MRCU History

The Mosquito Research & Control Unit was founded in 1965 under the leadership of Marco Giglioli, with a mission to provide the Cayman Islands with reliable mosquito control methods. Since its establishment, MRCU has become a recognized leader in mosquito research and control in the Caribbean, dedicated to safeguarding public health and quality of life.

Key Milestones:
  • 1965: MRCU was founded by Marco Giglioli, initiating critical research on mosquito control in the Cayman Islands.
  • 1970s-1980s: Development and application of early control techniques, laying the foundation for Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
  • 1990s: Introduction of environmentally friendly methods, moving away from organo-phosphate chemicals to bio-rational solutions.
  • 2000s-Present: Adoption of advanced technologies such as Wide Area Larviciding and Buffalo Turbine units to control mosquito populations efficiently.

MRCU Staff

Our team at MRCU consists of highly trained professionals dedicated to advancing mosquito control science and protecting public health in the Cayman Islands. From senior research officers and field technicians to administration and community outreach, every team member plays a vital role in achieving our mission. Together, we bring a combination of expertise, innovation, and community focus to manage mosquito populations responsibly and sustainably.

Vision, Mission, Goals

Our Vision
To create a healthier, mosquito-free environment across the Cayman Islands by employing the most advanced and sustainable mosquito control practices available.

Our Mission
MRCU’s mission is to protect the Cayman Islands from mosquito-borne diseases and improve the quality of life for all residents and visitors. Through rigorous research, responsible pest management, and continuous improvement, we aim to lead in effective and environmentally sound mosquito control.

Our Goals
  • Innovative Research: Conduct ongoing research to enhance existing control methods and assess new technologies for mosquito management.
  • Sustainable Practices: Focus on eco-friendly solutions by using bio-rational products that target mosquito larvae, reducing reliance on adult mosquito insecticides.
  • Efficient Application: Ensure all insecticides are applied efficiently and responsibly, minimizing environmental impact while maximizing effectiveness.
  • Advanced Technology: Evaluate and adopt promising new technologies, such as Wide Area Larviciding with aircraft and Buffalo Turbine units, to improve control methods.
